A Guide to the Area of Clapham, SW4
The district of Clapham is located in the London Borough of Lambeth. It is covered by the SW4 postcode district in the southwest part of London.
The area was filled with country houses in the 17th century. This trend continued well into the 18th and 19th centuries, when wealthy merchants favoured the areas of the Old Town and Clapham Common within Clapham. Later in the 20th century, when the area developed as a commuter suburb, Clapham fell out of favour with the rich.
Clapham Common is one of the notable areas of the district. It is a green space that occupies 220 acres and is overlooked by Clapham Old Town and a number of large Victorian and Georgian mansions. The park features three ponds and a Victorian bandstand. There is also the 18th century Holy Trinity Clapham Georgian church.
Clapham South is one of the neighbourhoods in the area, centred on the Clapham South tube station. This is a London Underground station on the Northern line between Balham and Clapham Common stations. The station is situated on the corner of Nightingale Lane and Balham Hill.
