A Short Sightseeing Guide to Brixton, SW9
Brixton was mostly developed after the opening of Vauxhall Bridge in 1816, which improved the links to Central London. One of the few surviving windmills of the Victorian expansion is located just off Brixton Hill.
Brixton is among the districts of the London Borough of Lambeth, in the south part of the capital. This is one of the 35 major centres of Greater London identified in the London Plan. Brixton is an inner London district, surrounded by Clapham, Camberwell, Herne Hill, Tulse Hill and Stockwell and served by the SW9 postcode.
Apart from the windmill, there are some notable grand houses of the Victorian era here. Among them is the St Matthew’s Church, located in the centre of the district. Brixton Prison, formerly known as Surrey House of Correction, was also built at that time.
The area is widely known for its clubbing and live music scene. More popular venues include the Mass, Electric Brixton and Brixton Academy. Some smaller venues include the Windmill, the Telegraph, Prince Albert and Upstairs at the Ritzy. The scene is completed by the Brixton Splash street party, which was established in 2006 and has been held every year ever since.
