Admire the Area of Tooting, SW17
Tooting is one of the districts of the London Borough of Wandsworth. It is located in the south part of the capital city of London, 8 kilometres southwest of Charing Cross. It falls within the SW17 postcode distrit.
The first settlement examples in the area are of pre-Saxon times. The name of the district is derived from Anglo-Saxon, but there is no clear agreement on what it actually means. According to one theory it means ‘the people of Tota’, while another theory links the name to a watchtower, hence ‘the people of the look-out post’.
The ancient Roman road that connected Chichester to London passed through the area of Tooting. On it was built Tooting High Street.
The area mostly developed in the Victorian and Edwardian periods, although development also occurred in the early 20th century. That is when Totting Library was built, and added a second storey to some years later.
Tooting Commons, lying at the northern part of the district, was known as two separate spaces: Tooting Bec Common and Tooting Graveney Common. This is the location of the Tooting Bec Lido, the second largest open-air pool in the country.
There are two indoor markets in the area, with the entrances of both being located on Tooting High Street. Tooting Market features mostly Asian products. The other market – the Broadway Market – is among the largest ones in the capital, established in 1936. Both markets are operational every day of the week, although they get a particularly large number of visitors every Saturday.
